Apa itu Email?
Surat elektronik (disingkat ratel atau surel atau satau pos elektronik (disingkat pos-el) atau nama umumnya dalam bahasa Inggris “e-mail atau email” (ejaan Indonesia: imel) adalah sarana kirim mengirim surat melalui jalur internet. Dengan surat biasa umumnya pengirim perlu membayar per pengiriman (dengan membeli perangko), tetapi surat elektronik umumnya biaya yang dikeluarkan adalah biaya untuk membayar sambungan internet. Tapi ada perkecualian misalnya surat elektronik ke telepon genggam, kadang pembayarannya ditagih per pengiriman.
Email adalah salah satu aplikasi jaringan yang sangat tua. Tapi justru email adalah aplikasi yang sangat penting dalam berkomunikasi lintas negara dan lintas benua. Pada RFC 822 menjelaskan tentang bentuk pesan / data yang dapat dikirim oleh email terdiri dari sebuah header dan body. Keduanya direpresentasikan dalam format text. Tetapi dimana telah kita ketahui bahwa email tidak hanya membawa pesan berupa teks tapi juga gambar dan pesan multimedia lainya. Oleh karena itu RFC 822 diperluas lagi pengertiannya pada tahun 1993 dan diupdate lagi pada tahun 1996 supaya email dapat membawa pesan multimedia. RFC ini dikenal sebagai RFC kelahiran MIME. MIME terdiri dari 3 bagian yaitu:
1. Header yang terdiri dari Content description (diskripis dari jenis MIME yang dapat dibaca), content type (tipe data yang terdapat pada pesan) dan content – transfer – Ecoding (bagaimana data dalam pesan diencoding).
2. Set of content type , MIME mendefinisikan jenis image yang berbeda sebagai contoh /image/jpeg dan image/gif.
3. Way to encode data, adalah cara data seperti image dikirimkan dalam bentuk ASCII.
Pada Tugas ini akan diperlihatkan file attachment berupa image/gambar yang direpresentasikan dalam code ASCII (diencoding) oleh mail server. Ini dapat dilakukan dengan mudah antara lain dengan mengirimkan email ke tujuan sembarang (dalam kasus ini alamat emailnya rfgg@yahoo.com)
